Leader's name and title: Mrs. Indra Nooyi, CEO of PepsiCo
Mrs. Nooyi had joined Pepsi in the year 1994 and has consistently climbed up the hierarchy ladder through her exemplary work and performance. In the year 2001, Mrs. Nooyi was named the CFO of Pepsi. She had played an extremely important role in the year 1997 when Pepsi divested its restaurants into Tricon. She was instrumental in the acquisition of Tropicana in 1998 and the merger of Quaker Oats.
The company PepsiCo is a multinational food and beverage company. The main products and brands in its portfolio are Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Lay's, Gatorade, Tropicana, 7 Up, Doritos, Lipton Teas, Quaker Foods, Cheetos, Mirinda, Ruffles, Aquafina, Pepsi Max, Tostitos, Sierra Mist, Fritos, and Walkers. The culture at the company is a vibrant one. The company attributes its success not to its brands but to its people. The company provides its employees a supportive and empowering workplace.
Mrs Indra Nooyi was appointed as the CEO of Pepsi w.e.f 1st October 2006. She will complete 9 years at the helm of the company in around 40 days time. She was born in Chennai (India) and did her schooling from Holy Angels Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School. She did her bachelors in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from Madras Christian College and her post graduate diploma in management from Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta.
She started her career as a product manager in Johnson and Johnson. She joined Yale School of Management in 1978 and then went on to work with different companies like BCG, Motorola and ABB.
As a leader Mrs Nooyi places emphasis on the 5c's - competency, courage, confidence, communication and compass. Mrs Nooyi has got strong communication skills. She has got healthy relationship with all her employees. She follows moral compass and lives by moral codes.
Her major challenge has been the drop in sales of colas and other soft drinks due to their percieved health risks. At helm she has been introducing newer and healthier options like sugar free variants, putting greater emphasis on food divisions and changing the image of the company. She is now looking at rolling out newer and healthier snacks. The second challenge is the failure of prevous strategy and the implementation of a new strategy. She is backing her strategy and will spend heavily on marketing and advertising. The thrid challenge she has faced is the problem of rising costs. She has decided to cut costs aggressively, even planning to lay off as many as 8,000 to 9,000 employees.
