Question

Instructions Read each of the following scenarios. Think about each response relative to other cultures. Explain the underlying cultural beliefs of each answer given. Discuss which answer seems the most logical to you personally and why.

Scenario 1

A murder has been committed and one man has been accused of the crime. You want to know whether he is guilty or innocent. You should:

1.Observe the accused man. Guilty people usually give themselves away in how they talk or act.

2.Look for physical evidence. You must find some footprint, fingerprint, or property that connects the accused man with the crime.

3.Find witnesses. You should talk with all who knew the accused man, were at the scene of the crime, and so forth.

4.Put the accused person to a test and see how he behaves. This might be a psychological test or some physical test that will give you proof.

Scenario 2

You are a very fortunate person. You are happy, healthy, and intelligent. You have a strong and loving family. Almost everything you have set out to do turns out well. You think::

1.I am just lucky. Some people are lucky, some people are not. I happen to be lucky.

2.I must be careful; good and bad tend to balance, and one of these days things will begin to go badly for me.

3.Life is what you make it. To be happy you have to "think happy", as happiness is all up to the individual's attitude and frame of mind.

4.Somebody or some force is watching over me. Call it "God" or a guardian angel or some other supernatural power – I have such faith.

Write a minimum of 2 paragraphs for each of the 3 scenarios. Demonstrate your knowledge of different cultural beliefs.

a. observe the accused man. Guilty people usually give themselves away in how they talk or act.

Coming from a completely different culture, we do not share the same perspectives as USA culture! In many stages in life this statement was used to judge me. If I had done something wrong and my parents had caught me, the first line would be “Why are you so quiet? What did you do wrong?” This is a common courtesy and manner that I was raised with, it is that if you are wrong then you stay quiet! This always led to me acting differently also!

Scenario 2

4.Somebody or some force is watching over me. Call it "God" or a guardian angel or some other supernatural power – I have such faith.

This is a concept that is really well accepted within my religion. There is no idea of having a name for “the almighty” in the religion that I practice. But the idea is to follow the path of truth and justice. Things like karma are there and are heavily considered. However the main idea is that ‘someone’ is watching over you and that you need to just be true to yourself. Keep a clear conscience and be truthful, and keep faith that things will be just. This type of culture difference means so much to me, because this is the reason that I wake up and do good to others!
