Problem 12-3

The following table lists the components needed to assemble an end item, lead times (in weeks), and quantities on hand.

If 45 units of the end item are to be assembled, how many additional units of B are needed? (Hint: You don’t need to develop an MRP plan.)

An order for the end item is scheduled to be shipped at the start of week 9. What is the latest week that the order can be started and still be ready to ship on time? (Hint: You don’t need to develop an MRP plan.)

The following table lists the components needed to assemble an end item, lead times (in weeks), and quantities on hand.

Explanation / Answer

b)

The above calculation can be explained as the lead time to compplete actvity L is 2 weeks and it has component B and J , the lead time to add new units for B and Jis 2 & 3 weeks respectively hence it will take atleat 3 weeks to start working to prepare L so total time required to make L ready=2+3=5 weeks similary for C & K the total lead time becomes 4 & 5 hence respectively.

The maximum of the three will be lead time = 5 days to start worrking on end product, the end product takes 1 day and hence it requires (5+1=)6 weeks to produce end product.

hence the latest week is 9-6+1=4 th week

Units to be assembled End Unit 45 L 90 C 45 K 135 B=2*90 180 G 90 H 540 J 270 B=45*2 90 B=135*2 270 total B required=180+90+270= 540 Available in hand= 30 Units B needed= 510
