Question

Comments on this, i need a paragraph on comments..... Controversy surrounding abortion has been around for many years and will continue to be a topic of debate in the 21st century as well due to many reasons. One of the reasons this topic is of great debate and will continue to be is due to two very different views from the' pro-life' and 'pro-choice' groups. Pro-life groups oppose abortion while Pro-choice advocates support the right of the woman to make her own choice and the privacy around that choice. There are also many religious groups whose beliefs and religion weigh into views on abortion and even contraceptives. Another reason this is a great debate is that many disagree on when "person-hood" is achieved; conception or at birth. This leads us to ask what rights does the unborn have or how can we protect those who exist but do not yet have a voice. Abortion is a topic of great debate for far more reasons than these but some of these reasons listed are where we really have trouble finding a middle ground on policies and positions. As a member of the moral community my ethical position on abortions is that it should at all costs be avoided. I feel that in cases of rape, incest and the best interest of the life of the mothers there are exceptions. I would defend my position ethically with the use of non-maleficence for the fetus as an abortion inevitably causes harm to the fetus and interrupts its course to human development. As a health care practitioner we must consider all sides of the patient care and apply our ethics and principles. In the health care profession you must always consider autonomy. In this case it would be the right of the woman to decide for herself what she would like to do. You may also have to think deeper and apply utilitarianism and consequentalism. Is this procedure going to provide the greatest net benefit or good for the greatest number. Although abortion ultimately ends the development of the fetus there are many reasons it could be justified using these two principles. Such as the mother's life being at risk, if the pregnancy isn't terminated one or both mother and child could die, where no one life would benefit. Other examples may be if the mother is a child herself and cannot afford to feed or support the child, ultimately the child would suffer or possibly perish in that situation as well, again not benefiting the most (both mother and child) especially the life of the child's. I do not feel there is one right answer or policy for governing abortion, especially after learning how to ethically approach situations in the health care industry. We may have our own moral views however we need to provide our care with ethics and principles in mind which can sometimes have a very different look than your own moral beliefs. I do not believe in abortion if it can be avoided however if I had a patient with their life in danger I would have to go with the care that would have the greatest outcome for that patients life, which in some cases could be termination of a pregnancy. One thing I would propose to the current policy would be the amount of time until a pregnancy can be terminated. I personally think 20 weeks is too far along. I would think in cases of rape or incest one would know they want to terminate a pregnancy very quickly. I also think at the 9-16weeks point one could scientifically know that the fetus has brain function and argue that if you don't agree that person-hood is achieved at conception it should when the human organism has brain waves and activity. While I don't know exactly how it would be governed, which can be a problem with a policy, I would also propose that we monitor the amount of times a woman has an abortion to ensure it isn't being used as a method of birth control. In our governments policy breakdown it states "abortion as an exclusive method of birth limitation could theoretically cost $2,000 a year". With those cost estimates the price of one abortion could provide family planning services for several years. I think we should monitor for this reason and also ensure the proper conseling, education and assistance with contraceptions are available after an abortion to try and prevent another in the future.
