Question

Plato suggested that the best type of leader for any nation is a philosopher (wise) King. Understandably, our immediate response is 'not really' since democracy is the best system to produce the best leader chosen by the people. Consider that while monarchy where a king rules does not offer us a choice, the idea may be that like any other career, profession, or key function, a king is taught and groomed to be an effective leader from the day he/she is born. Now, consider that a democracy is supposed to produce the best leader regardless of his/her lineage - does it really do so on consistent basis? Now, in less than 50 words defend democracy or advocate monarchy.

Explanation / Answer

Democracy can produce leaders on consistence basis because it provides options and competition which is not provided by Monarchy. Democracy ensures that the best person moves forward by competing with several others. This characteristic of democracy ensures refinement of leader and their skills to a level required by the need of time.
