Question
Succinc acid has a pKa of 4.21. A certain solution contains 0.04 M sodium succinic acid and 0.06 M succinate. What would be the pH of the solution??PLEASE Show work and answer with a numerical value. I just asked this question and someone answered with words..... not helpful. I really am trying to understand this -- thanks. Succinc acid has a pKa of 4.21. Explanation / Answer
Succinic acid is a weak acid. When this acid is mixed with its salt, a buffer system is generated. pH of a buffer can be calculated by using Hinderson Hasselbalch equation.
pH = pKa + log [succinate/succinic acid]
= 4.21 + log[0.06/0.04]= 4.21 + log(1.5) = 4.39
pH of the solution will be 4.39.
