Please help!!
A rule of thumb based on the Arrhenius Equation states that for every 10 degree K rise in temperature, the reaction rate approximately doubles. An old literature procedure states a reaction takes two hours to reach completion when refluxed in benzene (b.p. 80 o C), a common solvent, but known carcinogen linked to leukemia and bone marrow abnormalities. Hence, for safety, you wish to replace benzene with the more benign toluene (b.p. 110 o C). How long do you expect the reaction will take in this new solvent, assuming the concentrations stay the same?
Explanation / Answer
Answer: 15 minutes
According arhhenius rate equation K=Ae-Ea/RT. every 10 degrees K rise temperature reaction rate doubles
our reaction in benzene at 80 oC completes in 2 hours(120 minutes)
new reaction in toluene at 110 oC. that means new reaction 30 oC more (110-80=30)
10 oC reaction doubles,
30 oC reaction faster with 23 = 8 times, that means it complete in 120 min/8=15 min
In toluene reaction completes in 15 minutes only
