Question

COULD SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY THE ANSWERS IN RED ARE RIGHT AND WHY?

Use the diagram below to answer the following questions. a. In which scenario do you see a molecule in the excited triplet state (choose one)? scenario #1 scenario #2 both scenerios neither scenario Which scenario depicts a molecule in an excited vibrational state (choose one)? scenario #1 scenario #2 both scenerios neither scenario In which scenario can a visible photon possibly be emitted (choose one)? scenario #1 scenario #2 both scenerios neither scenario

Explanation / Answer

5. Ground state and excited state

a. Scenario where molecule is in triplet state

neither scienario

In a triplet state, the electrons will have same orientation, that is direction would be on the same side. Here in both cases, the electrons are of opposite orientation and thus does not represen the triplet excited state.

b. Scienario where molecules is in a excited vibrational state,

both scenario

Having opposite orientation of electrons in ground and excited state depicts vibrational excited state of the moelcule. The other way round would be a triplet state.

c. Scenario where a visible photon may possibly be emitted

scenario #2

the number of electrons in the excited state is greater than the ground state and thus the excess electron would be giving off the photon. In the scenario#1 the electrons are paired in ground state and thus no excess photon is emitted.
