Question

I have just performed a lab experiment where we got nmr's and had to find the major and minor. The unknowns turned out to be Benzhydrol as the major and caffeine as our minor. We performed a mixed melting point but I'm unsure if it's importance is for the major or minor. I have just performed a lab experiment where we got nmr's and had to find the major and minor. Explanation / Answer

Yes it's importance for purity of Benzhydrol which was synthesized, It is not important for determining for the major or minor. Since if the minor caffeine would become as a soluble impurity and the major Benzhydrol will usually melts at a lower temperature than the pure Benzhydrol compound. It can also melt over a wide range of temperatures and is called the “melting point depression. Please note that insoluble impurities will have no effect on a major compound’s m.p. For this reason it's important to measure the melting point pure compound which was extracted during the coarse of laboratory experiment to double confirm that we got the right product in high yield with maximum purity.
