The electron transport chain is a series of proteincomplexes that transfer hyrdogen ions from the inside of themitochondrial inner membrane to the outside. Fermentation is a pathway alternative to normal (aerobic)metabolism. Glycolysis functions by changing the state ofelectron carrier molecules such as NAD+/NADH and allowing then tocarry electrons to the electron transport chain. Withoutoxygen, the electron transport chain does not function, so the NADHgenerated by glycolysis has no where to go. Fermentation isanother pathway that can use NADH and convert it back to the NAD+that glycolysis needs to continue.
