You must show allof your work and include units on allquantities to receive full credit. Since this is an extra credit problem, I will pay close attention to units and sign conventions. Determine wavelength, in meters, ofligh emitted when an electron in a hydrogen atom makes a transition from n 6 ton 3. Please include following steps in your answer: (i calculation of (i) the calculation of and calculation of the wavelength ofthe electron. N M

Explanation / Answer

For H - atom the energy of an orbit is given by

En = -21.77x10-19 /n2 J /atom

Thus E6 for H-atom =   -21.77x10-19 /36 J /atom

= - 0.6047 x10-19 J

nd E3 for H - atom = -21.77x10-19 /9 J

= -2.419 x10-19 J

Thus delta E = E6 - E3

= [ 2.419 -0.6047] x10-19 J

= 1.8143 x10-19 J

We know delta E = hv = hc/wavelength

thus wavelength of photon = hc /E

= [6.626 x10-34J.sec x 3.00x 108 m/sec ] / 1.8143 x10-19 J

= 1.0956 x10-6 m
