Question

New elements are discovered by forming them in a particle accelerator. Some of these elements are highly unstable, yet scientist would like to ensure that when placing them into the periodic table based on the atomic number the chemical trends seen down a group are still valid. Element 108, hassium, has been created in the lab and the chemistry of this new element has been investigated. Two pieces of data researchers have gathered is that hassium forms an oxide similar to osmium, Os, and that hassium oxide was found to condense at a higher temperature than osmium oxide indicating that it is less volatile. These observations helped justify the placement of hassium below osmium on the periodic table. Based on the trends in the periodic tabled that were presented in class, describe what trends you might expected to observe for the element 117 directly below astatine(At, element 85).

Explanation / Answer

As the element is below the astatine hence it belong to the halogen family and also have a valency 1 .Astatine is obtained from radioactive decay of uranium and thorium similarly this element also expected to be radioactive and unstable in nature due to which it might not have a fixed booking and melting point.

It's Oxidation states will be 7,5,3,1,-1 .As this new element is the lowest member of the halogen family hence it will have highest electropositivity among it's family members.
