Question

I know this is the worst image in the world. My only question - why is the Z conformation minor? Is it because of steric hinderence? If so, is that the only thing I have to look for? (Which one has the largest groups farthest apart)? Is that the only rule?

Thanks

Explanation / Answer

In general trans isomer is more stable than cis isomer. Hence, trans isomer is major product. When R groups are on opposite side of double bond, the steric interactions are reduced.
