Give molecular formula, structure, and label and explain why the scans that support your answer 8. Identify the compounds from the following scans, explain your reasoning. (a) Explain why the below scans represent pentanoic acid. Give molecular formula, structure, and label and explain why the scans that support your answer (b) Explain why the below scans represent 2,2-Dimethyl Propanoic Acid. Give molecular formula, structure, and label and explain why the scans that support your answer NROPANOIC ACID, 2.2-DIMETHYL, ETHYL ESTER NIST Chemistry WebBook (httplmwebbock rlst.gov/chemistry)Explanation / Answer
8. a. 1.Strong O----H stretching in the region 2800 to 3200 cm-1 due to hydrogen bonding and also due to the C-H stretching in that region
2. Strong C=O stretching in the region 1600 to 1800 cm-1 from the C=O of the carboxylic functional group.
Mol Formula : C5H10O2
Structural Formula :CH3-CH2-CH2-CH2-COOH
NMR : 5 signals. 5 for each of the carbons apart from the carboxyl carbon and 1 for the COOH proton which appears as a broad singlet around 10 - 13 ppm. Two of these signals overlap as they have very similar chemical shifts.
8 (b) : Molecular Formula : C5H10O2
Structural Formula : CH2(CH3)-CH(CH3)-COOH
IR : 1.Strong O----H stretching in the region 2800 to 3200 cm-1 due to hydrogen bonding and also due to the aliphatic C-H stretching in that region.
2. C=O stretching in the region 1600 to 1800 cm-1 from the C=O of the carboxylic functional group.
NMR : The NMR Spectra is a singlet at 1.08 ppm, the proton in the carboxylic acid is seen at 12 ppm
