Question

Which pure compound would have the higher boiling point? Explain you answer fully comparing the types of IMF that these compounds could possibly generate. b) CH_4 or H_2O c) CH_3CH_2CH_2CH_2CH_3 or CH_3C(CH_3)_2CH_3 Draw an IMF diagram depicting the strongest force of attraction in a sample of the following compounds: a) ethanol (CH_3CH_2OH) b) PCl_3 a) Draw the 2-step solution cycle diagram for calcium chloride. The process is exothermic. b) would the heat of hydration value be bigger for the Ca^2+ ion or for the Cl^- ion? Explain your answer.

Explanation / Answer

1)

a )

CH3OH has higher boilig point . it is due to inter molecular hydrogen bonding .   (CH3)3COH is buliker molecule it cannot form intermolecular hydrogen bond .

b)

H2O is higher boiling point . it is due to hydrogen bond present in it . where as in CH4 weak dispersion forces are present

c)

CH3CH2CH2CH2CH3 has higher boiling point. it is due to straight chain . both molecules having dispersion forces but straight chain molecule can occupy larger surface area than branched molecule. so it has higher boiling point
