Question

If there are approximately 83000 people living in Nampa Idaho at the time this question is written April 24th 2017 and if there is a average of 4 people per household and that each household owns two cars let's perform a calculation to determine how much total carbon dioxide is generated at STP by the residents of the city of Nampa each year by use of the following information. Each car has a 16 gallon gasoline tank. Each car in each household consumes one tank of gasoline per week during each week of the year. Let's assume that gasoline is pure benzene C6H6 and is burned to completion in air when the tank is empty. The density of benzene is 5.76 lbs/gallon. Again the question is approximately how much total carbon dioxide gas in LITERS is generated by the residents of Nampa. We will ignore the other sources of carbon dioxide generation in the city.

Explanation / Answer

There are 4 people per house . No of houses= 83000/4 =20750 . There are two cars per house. Total of cars= 20750* 2= 41500 . Total of gasoline in each car= 16 gallons. Total gallons= 41750*16= 668000 gallons. Density = 5.76 lbs/ gallons. Mass of benzene= 66800* 5.76 lbs =3847680 lbs

Moles of benzene = 3847680/72= 53440 lb moles

The combustion of benzene is C6H6+ 7.5O2----à6CO2+ 3H2O

Moles of CO2 generated= 6*53440 lb moles = 320640 lb moles

Mass of CO2 generated= 320640*44 lbs= 1.41*107 lbs

1lb =453.5 gm, 1.41*107 lbs= 1.41*107* 453.5 gm =6.4*109 gm

Moles of CO2= 6.4*109/44 =1.45*108 gmoles

1 gmole of any substance at STP occupies 22.4 L

1.45*108 gmoles occupies 1.45*108*22.4 L=3.26*109 L
