Question

Hey guys!
So here's my dilemma. Question 30 of chapter 8 review states :"Some plant leaves contain yellow or red pigments as well as thechlorophyll. In the fall, those leaves may become yellow or red.Explain the basis for these color changes." But this confuses me,since the chapter says nothing regarding pigments reflecting lighton the visible spectrum that's their own color. I could guess andsay that's why, but what would I learn from that? And I'm alsoconfused because chlorophyll absorbs red and yellow light fairlywell. So, please get back to me asap. Thanks!

Explanation / Answer

1.During winter, there is not enough light or water forphotosynthesis. so the rate of photosynthesis willdecreased and live off the food they stored during the summer. 2.The green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves. As thebright green fades away, we begin to see yellow and orange colors.Small amounts of these colors have been in the leaves all along. Wejust can't see them in the summer, because they are covered up bythe green chlorophyll. 3.Due above reasons ,we see bright redsand purples (pigments like carontenoids, anthocynanin ) see inleaves are made mostly in the fall.
