CHEM 1211L Lab Manual- Page 108 Quantitative Chemical Reactions Objective lab is to provide an introduction to the quantitative aspects fcemical reactions, the concept of solubility, making and diluting as they apply to a laboratory molarily, writing ionic equations, and limiting reagent considerations. Procedure ou will be making a set of solutions from the following solid substances: calcium oride dihydrate and sodium carbonate monohydrate. requir Stock Solutions: For each of these compounds, calculate the mass of solid in to make 100 mL of a 0.5 M solution. (Note: make sure to account for the water tne hydrated salts.) Write a procedure for preparing each of these solutions using a 100 mL volumetric flask and the mass of each solid you calculated. These solutions are your stock solutions. Dilutions: Calculate the volume of your 0.5M sodium carbonate stock solution required to make a 100 mL of a dilute solution with a concentration of 0.125 M. Repeat the calculation to determine the volume of calcium chloride stock solution required to make 100 mL of a dilute solution with a concentration of 0.100 M. Write a procedure for preparing each of these dilute solutions from your stock solutions. Specify in your procedure what glassware is appropriate to use to measure volumes and contain the final solution Ask your instructor to check your procedures. Once you have obtained approval, make each of these confusion. you will calculate the actual concentration of the solutions you make. solutions using your procedures. Be sure to label each solution to avoid Also make sure to record, in the data section, the actual masses used as 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask, mix 100 mL each of the two dilute solutions, Record your In a observatio with filter paper dentification. Place the filiter paper with the solid product on a watch glass and place in the oven to dry. Once dry, determine the weight of the solid product. ns. Isolate your solid product by filtration through a Buchner funnel equipped and a water aspirator. Write your initials on the filter paper for later Writing lonic Equations- Based upon your observations, write the balanced chemical reaction for this process in to label the physical states of each reactant. (Note: There is no need to water molecules from the hydrated salts in the chemical equation.) You will certain inlu bde to detemine the idenity of any insoluble products (solids) by interpreting the be able toExplanation / Answer
For Making stock solutions :
mol of solid = 0.5 mol/L * (100/1000) L = 0.05 mol
mol of solid, 0.05 mol = x gm / molar mass of solid in gm/mol
find the x gm from the above equation and dissolve this in 100mL of water to get 0.5M
concentration stock solution.
For making dilutions :
0.5mol/L * V1 = 0.125 mol/L * (100/1000)L
V1 = 0.025 L = 25mL
So 25mL of 0.5M of Na2CO3 stock solution is required to make 100mL of dilute solution of
0.125 M concentration. All this dilutions should be done in 250mL flasks
In a similar fashion ( 0.1mol/L * (100/1000)L ) / 0.5mol/L = 0.02 L or 20 mL of
CaCl2 solution is required to make 100mL of 0.1 M of diluted solution.
Carefully above calculated amounts of solutions should be pipetted from stock solutions
into 250mL flasks and diluted accordingly.
