Question

Meme Date Safety Matt was doing an experiment that required the use of dilute sulfuric acid. The instructor told students to mix 1 part of concentrated sulfaric acid with 4 parts of water and that you should alw ays add acisl te water Mant was not paying attention when the instructions were given and he added water to acid. There was a violent pop noise, the beaker became hot and some of the solution splatiered out of the beaker onto his skin and his partner's skin. 1 whatshouldMattandhispartnerdo'(4 ) 2 What is the lesson learned? (4 pt)

Explanation / Answer

First thing they have to do is to wash the acid from their skin as soon as possible. Expose that part of skin into a lasrge amount of water, make sure that the acid flushed away. Go immediately after that for medical treatment for the burn caused by sulfuric acid. The lesson you should learn from this is, always be attentive in class. Specially whenever you are working in a chemical laboratory listen to the instructions properly. Chemicals are not very friendly things, many of them are very much corrosive. When it comes to sulfuric acid which is most commonly used in all laboratories be very careful. Try to protect your body as much as possible. The reaction water with sulfuric acid is highly exothermic, that is why you should add H2SO4 on water. When you are doing the opposite thing, immediately after adding a drop of water heat will generate for that water will vapourized and along with that acid will splatter. When you are adding acid on water ther is much amount of water to compensate the heat generated, and the above kind of accident will not happen.
