Question
I need help with understanding precipitation reactions. I get balancing them at the end, I get sometimes they make a solid precipitate, what I don't get is actually writing the equation out with all their charges. If I could give you two examples and you could explain just how and why the charges switch and all that I would greatly appreciate it. 1. (NH4)2SO4 + SrCl2---> this is where I have trouble is doing the double displacement reaction, the charges throw me off when they switch please help I just don't get it 2. NH4Cl + AgNO3----> I get they switch anions though I don't get the charges and balancing the charges pleas helpExplanation / Answer
(NH4)2SO4 + SrCl2 = 2 NH4Cl + SrSO4 NH4Cl + AgNO3 = AgCl + NH4NO3 These are your balanced equations. The way it works is that the first goes to the last and the third goes to the second, then you balance the charges. It would be easier to explain if I could draw arrows, but for instance, the NH4 goes to the CL2, where the Sr goes to the SO4, then you balance the charges. Hope this helps.
