Question

The pKa of NH3 is 36; the pKa of H20 is15.7. What is the product of the reaction of acetamide with OH-?

Explanation / Answer

product of the reaction of acetamide with OH-: CH3CONH2 + Na+-OH ----> CH3COO -Na+ + :NH3 The acetamide will be hydrolysed giving the acetate ion as the main organic product: CH3CONH2 + OH- ---> (CH3CO2)- + NH3 One (non-organic) product, present in small concentrations is the ammonium ion (NH4)+ . Some of the ammonia will remain in solution and some will come off as ammonia gas. In a closed system, the proportion that comes off as a gas will increase as the temperature rises and will increase as the concentration of hydroxide ion rises. In an open system, all the ammonia will eventually escape as the gas.
