Since the nitrogen was collected via water displacement, the sample is saturated with water vapor. If the total pressure of the mixture at 21 C is 1.79 atm, what is the partial pressure of nitrogen? Explanation / Answer

When a gas is collected by displacement of water some of the water escapes as water vapour and hence additional pressure is created because of this.(this is because as the amount of gases increases in same volume pressure increases.)

the total pressure=pressure due to gas+pressure due to saturated vapour

1atm=760 mm of Hg

water vapour pressure=18.7 mm of Hg=18.7/760 atm=0.02368 atm

pressure of gas=total pressure-water vapour pressure=1.79-0.02368 atm=1.7663 atm
