A sample is suspected of being one of four compounds. When subjected to ultraviolet light this sample fluoresced with a light blue colour. Reference to a table of fluorescent compounds showed that the colour of fluorescence for each of the suspected compounds was bright red for compound A; light blue for compound B; and light blue for compound C; compound D did not fluoresce at all. What compound or compounds are eliminated from further consideration as a result of the fluorescence test? (a) Compounds A and D are eliminated as they did not show a light blue colour.
(b) tests for aromatics and conjugated olefins could be done as these are the main classes under which UV qualitative analysis is done. Quantitatively IR spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy could be done.
