Question

Pick the correct electron transport complex (I-V) for all of the following:

      a) Contains FMN ______                           b) cytochrome c acts as the oxidizing agent ______

      c) Pumps 2 protons/electron pair ______   d) Does not contain an iron/sulfur center _______

      e) inhibited by rotenone _______             f) oxidizes CoQH _________

      g) reduces CoQ _______                          h) Does not pump protons ________

      i) phosphorylates ADP _________           j) Contains copper ________

(please explain)

Explanation / Answer

Complex I (NADH-Co Q reductase) contains FMN as prosthetic group.

Cytochrome c acts as the oxidising agent in complex III (Co-cytochrome c reductase).

Complex IV pumps 2electron /electron pairs from thr matrix.

Complex IV does not iron-sulphur centre, it includes copper ion as prosthetic group.

Rotenone, a plant product inhibits the transfer of electrons through Complex I.

Complex III oxidizes CoQH by gaining the electrons transferred by complex I and Complex II.

Complex I and Complex II reduces CoQ.

Complex II does not pump protons.

Complex V (ATP synthase) utilizes the energy dissipated by electron transport and proton transport across the inner mitochondrial membrane. The concerned action generates an electrochemical gradient for protons, with a lower pH value outside the inner membrane than inside. The energy tapped by allowing protons to flow back across the membrane and down this gradient, through the enzyme ( ATP synthase). ATP synthase uses this energy to generate ATP from ADP in a phosphorylation reaction.

Complex IV contains copper.
