A.Caculate the amount of body heat(kcal) released when 50.0 gof water at 100 c hits the skin and cools the body temperature of37 C?? B. Cauculate the amunt of heat (kcal) released when 50.0g of steam at 100 C hits the skin condenses and cools thebody temp of 37 C. b. Use anwers in a and b to expalin why steam burns are sosevere? Explanation / Answer

Part a: heat released = mct = (50g)(1.00cal/g)(100-37) = 3150 cal = 3.150 kcal part b: First: steam cools to water at 100C heat released = heat of vaporization x mass = 540 cal/g x 50 = 27000 cal = 27kcal Second: it cools to 37 C heat released = mct =(50)(1)(100-37) = 3150 cal = 3.150 kcal Total : 27 + 3.150 = 30.15 kcal C. As you noticed in b; more heat is released in B versus A (30.15to 27 kcal). Steam has more energy than water and when steam cools,much more energy is given out (due to heat of vaporization).
