Question
Identify the acid and the base that are reactants in eachequation; identify the conjugate base and conjugate acid on theproduct side of each equation. (a)HI(aq)+H2O(l)--->H3O+(aq) +I-(aq) (b)OH-(aq)+NH4+(aq)----->H2O(l)+NH3(aq) (c)NH3(aq)+H2CO3(aq)---->NH4+(aq)+HCO3-(aq) Identify the acid and the base that are reactants in eachequation; identify the conjugate base and conjugate acid on theproduct side of each equation. (a)HI(aq)+H2O(l)--->H3O+(aq) +I-(aq) (b)OH-(aq)+NH4+(aq)----->H2O(l)+NH3(aq) (c)NH3(aq)+H2CO3(aq)---->NH4+(aq)+HCO3-(aq)Explanation / Answer
The acid is hydroiodic acid (HI) and the base is in this casewater. The conjugate acid is hydronium (H3O+) which will makethe solution be more acidic, and iodide ion goes into solution andacts as the conjugate base.B) The acid will be in this case ammonium (NH4+) which donatesprotons to the solution, and the base will be hydroxide (OH-) whichwill accept protons to make the solution more basic. Theconjugate acid will be the (NH3) and the conjugate base will bewater.
C) Carbonic acid will be the acid and NH3 will be the base, andthe conjugate acid will be HCO3- or hydrogen carbonate and theconjugate base is NH4+. The HCO3- will donate H+ ions to thesolution making it more basic and the NH4+ will accept the protonsmaking the solution less acidic and more basic.
