Question
Quantum numbers arise naturally from the mathematics used to describe the possible states of an electron in an atom. The four quantum numbers, the principal quantum number (n), the angular momentum quantum number (), the magnetic quantum number (m), and the spin quantum number (ms) have strict rules which govern the possible values. Identify allowable combinations of quantum numbers for an electron. Select all that apply. n-3, l=-2, m,=-1,me-1/2 n-5, 1-0, mz--0, ms=-1/2 n-4, 1-2,m= 3,m=-1/2 n-2, 1-1,m= 1,m= 0 n-3, 1-2, m,--1,m= +12Explanation / Answer
Principal quantum number (n) have the value of 1,2,3 natural numbers
Azimuthal quantum number (l) = 0 to (n-1) for each value of n (all integers)
Magnetic quantum number (ml) = -l to +l (including 0) for each value of l ( all integers)
Spin quantum number (ms) = +1/2, -1/2
Option 2 and 5 are only allowable combination.
Option 1 is wrong because l= -2 , which is not possible it will always be a positive integer
Option3 is wrong because for l=2 , ml= 3 is not allowed
Option 4 is wrong because ms = 0 which is not possible
Option 6 is wrong because for n= 5, l can be upto 4 only but here it is 5.
Correct answer option 2 and 5
