Question

Please help !!

By means of a plate column, acetone is absorbed from its mixture with air using a non-volatile absorption oil. The entering gas stream, 97% is to be absorbed and the concentrated liquor at the bottom is 10 mol % acetone. The equilibrium relationship for this system is y = 1.9x. Estimate the number of ideal stages(N) required to achieve desired separation using graphical method.

(NB: Correct answer is N=5 (i dont know why is 5, please explain. The answer that i got is N=4.2) . Please explain why is N=5. Thank You <3 . Please dont copy the answer from the Google web.

Explanation / Answer

If you are getting any fractional number then next higher digit is used. for example you are getting 4.2 in your result. then next higher digit is 5 so this number of plate is used. because number of plates cannot be 4.2

number of plates used for seperation should be 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5..... so on ... you canot have number of plates in fraction like 1.1, 3.2, 4.2, etc

In this case if you use smaller number. it will not give the desired seperation. for example in your case if you use 4 number of trays then it will not give desired seperation. then you will miss the target

so always use higher number what you ge like if 5.1 then 6 number of trays will be used
