Question
I have three ten gallon aquaria with the following contents: ... please see photo 4. I have three ten gallon aquaria with the following contents: #1 : one 2 g fish; no sediment layer on the bottom: rpid water circulation #2: total fish biomass of 20 g; a thick gravel layer interspersed water circulation #3: no fish, dense plant growth; no water circulation. with organic waste; no For which aquarium is Ozoo likely to be in equilibrium with the atmosphere? For any aquarium that is not in equilibrium, would it be a net source or sink of O2 to the atmosphere? Explain.Explanation / Answer
Part 1. For which aquarium is O2(aq) likely to be in equilibirium with the atmosphere ???
Ans:For #1 i.e. one 2g fish;no sediment layer on the bottom with rapid water circulation , O2(aq) likely to be in equilibrium with the atmosphere .Because there is no any sediment layer present in the bottom which provides more flexible contact of oxygen molecules with the atmosphere of the system. As in case #2 a thick layer is present so the contact of oxygen molecules becomes more complex and in case #3 because of absence of water circulation equilibrium never exist between the O2(aq) and the atmosphere.
Part 2. For any aquarium that is not in equilibrium, would it be a net source or sink of O2 to the atmosphere??
Ans: For case #2 and case #3 aquariums O2(aq) is not in in equilibirium with the atmosphere.
For case #2 , thick layer of sediment is present so the contact of oxygen molecules becomes more complex and it will be a net sink of O2 to the atmosphere.
And in case #3 because of the absense of fish and water circulation ,also there is no any existence of equilibrium takes place between O2(aq) and the atmosphere of the given system so it will be a net sink of O2 to the atmosphere.
