Thank you so much!

Choose either 1) or 2) in the each of the four questions on which is more reactive as a nucleophile in a protic solvent,

Remember to please explain why that compound is more reactive than the other as a nucleophile in a protic solvent (best if you can use words to explain as well as drawings)

1 Which compound in the following pairs is more reactive as a nucleophile in a protic solvent? (4 Marks) OH 1) 2) 1) 2) H3C-O D) 2) 2) 1)

Explanation / Answer

A) 1 is answer. This is because in polar protic solvet ions like O-Na+ are stabilised due to electrostatic attractions between ions ( O- Na+) and H2O. Hence availability of nucleophile O- is low as it is surrounded by H2O molecules. Hence 1 which has relatively less interactions is readily available as nucleophile .

B) 1 is answer. Explanation is similar to as mentioned in A

C) 1 is answer. This is because O is more electronegative than S. Hence O- is strongly bonded to H2O than S-. Thus S- is more readily available as nucleophile than O-.

D) 2 is answer. Molecule 1 is bulky and it readily acts as base than nucleophile. Molecule 1 is bulky and hence when we have nucleophilic substitution reaction lots of repulsions occur which makes moleucle 1 unfavourable nucleophile. Hence 2 is stronger nucleophile
