Question
Hw # 2-Thermodynamics (2018) 2. (8 pts) Is the entropy increasing, decreasing or staying about the same? Use the qualitative entropy rules discussed in lecture to determine the answer. Write the answer to the right of each process. a) Ni(s) + 4CO()Ni(CO)40D b) mowing a lawn using a mulching mower c) H2CO3(ag) H20() + CO2(g) d) 3H2(g)+ N2(8)2NH3(g) e) H20(g) + CO(g)H2l8) CO28) f) 5000ethylene(g)polyethylene plastic(s) g) opening a bottle of carbonated beverage (like Coke/Pepsi) h) 2Fe(CO)5(1)-- Fe2(CO)9(s) + CO(g)Explanation / Answer
2. a) entropy decreases
When complex is formed, the number of molecules and uncertainty decrease
b) entropy increases
The process of mowing increases entropy because the grass which was not disturbed before is being disturbed.
c) entropy increases
The number of molecules in the reactant side is lesser than the number of molecules in the product side. Hence chaos is more after the reaction.
d)entropy decreases
The number of molecules in the product side is lesser. Hence the entropy reduces.
