Question
I. (10%) Write a summary from the text book or other resources about Phase Changes, Phase Diagrams, Energy Transformations with constant and changing pressure, and Unit Cells! (1.2-3, 2.4, 3.7, Ch. 4,9.4 and Ch. 10 are great references for from our book) 2· (20%) For the following phase diagram, answer the following questions? a. What does "B" and "D" indicate? "B" = b. Is there a difference between the process occurring at positions "F" and "r? c. What is the process occuring at "F" and "D"? d. What is the process that takes place from "H" to “A"?Explanation / Answer
Before answering note that in area under BCE the water is solid i.e ice.
Below DBC in which H lies the water exists as liquid.
And are above EBD in which G lies, the water exists as water vapour.
a) The point B at which the the curves meet is called the triple point. At this particular temperature and pressure all the three states of water can coexist.
The point D is called the critical point. At this point the phase boundary between Gaseous and liquid phase remains no more. i.e gaseous and liquid phase becomes indistinguishable.
b) No. As both of the points lie on the same phase boundary is liquid and gaseous phase there'll be no difference between the process occurring at these two points.
c) at point F, there's an equilibrium between Gaseous and liquid phase as it lies on the same phase boundary.
d) from H to A the liquid is converting into Solid phase. On going from H to A there will be a condition when both the phases will be in equilibrium and this will be on the phase boundary. At A only ice exists.
