Question

QUESTIONS 1. Explain how the iodine test allows you to distinguish between a solution containing starch and a solution containing maltose. Suppose that you are presented with two unknown solutions. You are told that one con- tains starch and the other contains a mixture of starch and maltose. 2. Could you use the iodine raction to distinguish them Why or why not? Could you use the Benedict's reaction to distinguish them? Why or why not? 3. Does either the potato or the onion test positive for starch? Which one stores energy in the form of starch?

Explanation / Answer

Question 1

Solution :-Iodine test is positive for starch. Starch turn into an intense blue black on addition of triiodine anion . Initially triiodine is red in colour which turn into intense blue black when added in starch solution.

Maltose does not give iodine test.

Question 2

Solution:- Iodine reaction is not used to distinguish them because iodine react with starch and it's colour change from red to deep blue both solution contain starch so iodine test is positive for both solution

Benedict's reaction is used to distinguish them because Benedict test is used for reducing sugar. So Benedict reaction is negative for starch solution and positive for the solution containing mixture of starch and maltose. In this solution red precipitate form.

Question 3

Solution :-potato test is positive for starch

Potato store energy in form of starch
