Question
Choose any one of the following questions to discuss in your own words (use minimal quotes). Within these questions, you can focus on any theme/topic (diet, exercise, a particular medical condition etc.) considered by Lieberman or (with my approval) of your own interest.
Why does Lieberman think “medicine needs a dose of evolution?”
What are “mismatch” diseases?
What is “dysevolution”?
What is “the vicious cycle of too much”?
What are the “the hidden dangers of novelty and comfort”?
What does he mean by “survival of the fitter”?
Your answer should include the following: How does an evolutionary perspective enhance your understanding of yourself, as a member of the species Homo sapiens, and/or humanity in general? Give specific examples to support your discussion and define technical terms in your own words.
Please keep direct quotes to a minimum and follow APA or MLA citation guidelines.
Explanation / Answer
Medicines need a dose of evolution as , like all biological sytems disease causing organisms are also evolving themselves making them resistan to antibodies. this evolution can outpace our medical techniques hence our medicines also need evolution.
Mismatch theory states that organisms possese traits passed down from generations preserved by natural slections however it might be possible that the envoirmental conditions have now changed and previous traits might not be useful or might cause disease in body. e.g: in prehistoric times sugars and fats were not part of our diet as they were not easily available. now they are part of our regular diet. This has led to obesity and chronic metabolic syndromes.
the hidden dangers of novelity and comfort would include that our body would be more prone to diseases. we are moving to lesser and lesser mechanichal work which may cause severe diseases or there might be other disease that might show up in coming times.
Survival of the fitter would mean that the organisams with the fittest bodies will be able to survive harsh conditions where as the rest of them would perish when exposed to extreme conditions.
