Question

Indicate what phenomenon is being explained. (1 point) Specify one alternative theory. (1 point)

Use the criteria of adequacy to assess the two theories and determine which is more plausible. Write a paragraph detailing your reasons for your choice. (2 points)

Scientists studied twenty terminal cancer patients, taking note of the overall mental attitudes of the patients. Some of them were characterized as having negative attitudes; they were often angry at their situation and experienced feelings of hopelessness and regret. But other patients were thought to have positive attitudes; they were generally upbeat, optimistic about their treatment, and hopeful. Most of those with positive attitudes lived longer than most of those with negative attitudes. A positive attitude can lengthen cancer patients’ lives.

Explanation / Answer

This is explaining the trauma theory. It says that certain mind-body connections which increase stress lead to cancer and it's progression inside the body.

One- alternative theory would be Toxin theory. This theory says that the daily body response is effected by byproducts produced from metabolism. All these byproducts are toxins. And accumulation of these toxins day by day is the cause of advancement of cancer. It is not the trauma of death which will lead to advancement of cancer.

Both theories are equally plausible. Obviously, negative attitude will disturb the metabolic processes of the body, and may lead to accumulation of more toxins.
