When this coal is burned, the sulfur is converted into sulfur dioxide gas. The sulfur dioxide is reacted with calcium oxide to form solid calcium sulfite. If the coal is burned in teh DPH power plant that uses 2300 tons of coal per day, what is the daily production of calcium sulfite, if the conversion is 98%? if 50 pounds of calcium oxide costa $13.50 how much does DPH power plant per day for CaO?

Total sulphur in 2300 tons coal = 2300 x 2.8/100
= 64.4 tons

Reaction of sulphur:

S+ O2 >> SO2

Mass of sulphur = 64.4 tons
= 64.4 x 106 g

Moles of sulphur = 64.4 x 106 /32

= 2.0125 x 106 moles


moles of sulphur = moles CaSO3
Mass CaSO3 = 120.17 g/mol x 2.0125 x 106 moles = 241.8 x 106 g = 241.8 tons
