Question
In Drosophila, “vermillion” is a an X-linked mutation which changes the eye color. This mutation is recessive and the wild type allele is dominant. Males with normal color of their eyes were mutagenized and then mated with vermillion-eyed females. The following progeny was obtained: 10, 007 males with vermillion eyes; 9,991 females with wild type eyes; and 2 females with vermillion eyes. What is amutation rate from the wild type allele to the vermillion allele in father’s gametes?
The answer is 0.02 %.. please sure how to acquire this value
Explanation / Answer
The mutation rate can be calculated using the formula
a= h/ N
where, h = average number of mutation hits per cell
N = total population.
The number of mutation hits for the wild type allele to vermillion alelle in father gamete is
number of male mutants / total number of popolation
= 10007/ 20000 = 0.5
a= h/ N
=0.5 / 20000 = 0.00025
= 0.02%
