Question

I really need help understanding how to do these problems, I reallydon't even know where to start on these. Could someone give me astep by step explanation on how to do them please? I can balanceequations but, it's the completing part I'm having problems withhere. Thank you so much for your help and time.

Complete and balance each of the following equations for combustionreactions.

(a) C7H16(l)+O2(g) ---->7CO2(g)+H2O(g)

(b) C4H10O(l)+O2(g) ---->8CO2(g)+10H2O(g)

Explanation / Answer

when a hydrocarbon (CxHy..with other elements) is combusted withoxygen, CO2 and H2O always form C7H16 + O2   ->   CO2 + H2O Balance carbon (there should be seven on each side) C7H16 + O2   ->   7CO2 + H2O Balance H (there should be 16 on both sides C7H16 + O2   ->   7CO2 + 8H2O Sum the amount of oxygen atoms on the right. 7*2 + 8 = 22. Conserveoxygen on left C7H16 + 11O2   ->   7CO2 + 8H2O Done. Was that clear? (b) C4H10O(l)+O2(g) ---->8CO2(g)+10H2O(g) another hydrcarbon combustion; you form CO2 and H2O C4H10O(l)+O2(g) ---->CO2(g)+H2O(g) balance C (4 on each side) C4H10O(l)+O2(g) ---->4CO2(g)+H2O(g) balance H (10 on each side) C4H10O(l)+O2(g) ---->4CO2(g)+5H2O(g) balance O; currenly there is 1 + 2 =3 on the left but 5 + 4*2 = 13on the right. Change the coefficient of O2 to 6 to balance C4H10O(l)+6O2(g) ---->4CO2(g)+5H2O(g)
