Identify the mechanism by which each of the reactions above proceeds from among the mechanisms listed. Use the letters a - i for your answers.

1.

2.

a = Electrophilic addition d = SN2 Nucleophilic substitution g = Nucleophilic subs at carbonyl(acyl Xfer) b = E2 Elimination e= Electrophilic aromatic substitution h = Conjugate (nucleophilic) addn c = SN1 Nucleophilic substitution f = Carbonyl nucleophilic addn Identify the mechanism by which each of the reactions above proceeds from among the mechanisms listed. Use the letters a - i for your answers. 1. 2.

Explanation / Answer

Answer 1: g (Nucleophilic subs at carbonyl (acyl transfer)

Carbonyl group of lactone is attacked by amine to form amide, i.e. transfer of acyl group from oxygen to nitrogen. Hence, mechanism is nucleophilic substitution at cabronyl (acyl transfer).

Answer 2: d (SN2 Nucleophilic substitution)

Chloro group of ally chloride is displaced by anion of cyclohexanone by attacking from backside so that simultaneous new bond formation and old bond breaking takes place.
