Question

For the exercise, I cannot figure out the center of gravity for y! Thanks!! PRACTICE IT Use the worked example above to help you solve this problem. Consider the figure below, where m1 5.89 kg, m2 2.29 kg, m 4.49 kg, 0.539 m, and d2 1.43 m. Treat the objects as point particles. di 1.00 m In 1n1 0.500 m d. mn, (a) Three particles are located in a coordinate system shown in Figure (a). Find the center of gravity 0.26 (b) How does the answer change if the object on the left is displaced upward by 1.00 m and the object on the right is displaced downward by 0.500 m (Figure (b)2 g 0.26 ycg_ 0.29 vm

Explanation / Answer

we know that,

Ycom = (m1y1 + m2y2 + m3y3 + m4y4)/(m1 + m2 + m3 + m4)

Ycom = (5.89 x 0 + 2.29 x 0 + 4.49 x 0 + 1.24 x 0.242)/(5.89 + 2.29 + 4.49 + 1.24) = 0.0216 m

Hence, Ycom = 0.0216 m
