Question 6 Two loudspeakers in a plane, 5.0 m apart, are playing the same frequency. If you stand 12.0 m in front of the plane of the speakers, centered between them, you hear a sound of maximum intensity. As you walk parallel to the plane of the speakers, staying 12.0 m in front of them, you first hear a minimum of sound intensity when you are directly in front of one of the speakers. What is the frequency of the sound? Assume the speed of sound is 340 m/s

Explanation / Answer

The path difference between two sound waves is

deltaX = sqrt(12^2 + 5^2) - 12

deltaX = 1 m

The path difference between two sound wave to get minimum intensity is equal to wavelength / 2

DeltaX = wavelength / 2

2*DeltaX = wavelength

The frequency of sound is

f = v / wavelength

f = v / 2*DeltaX

f = 340 m/s / (2 x 1 m)

f = 170 Hz
