Question

In farther chem studies, you will learn more information about thermodynamics and how bond breaking (breaking attractive forces) is endothermic, while making a bond (generating attractive forces) is exothermic. The difference between these forces is why some solids dissolve by an exothermic reaction (release heat), while other solids absorb heat and cool the solution. For an ionic solid dissolving in water, briefly identify the attractive forces being broken (endothermic) and the attractive forces being made (exothermic). Based on your results for your ionic solid dissolving, which forces are stronger and briefly explain how this leads to either an exothermic or an endothermic reaction.

Salt used: NH4Cl
I dont even know how to start this problem..
Please explain in detail..

Explanation / Answer

The dissolution of NH4Cl is endothermic process.

NH4-Cl bond is broken

Nh4+ ions and Cl- ions are solvated i.e electrostatically surrounded by H2O molecules.

since forces between NH4+ and Cl- ions in crystal is greater than forces between NH4+ and Cl- ions with water after dissolution some energy is taken from solvent to break bonds of NH4-Cl . Hence reaction is endothermic as energy is consumed in process
