Question

I have never done a Boltzmann equation. I have figured out the a.) though I don't know how correct it is quite yet because I want to get the other parts of it.
Please help me acquire the answers for b, c , d.

Consider an element that reaches its first excited state by absorption of 372.6 nm light. Determine the energy difference (kJ/mol) between the ground state and the first excited state. delta ? = If the degeneracies of the two states for the element are g*/g0 = 3, determine N*/?0 at 2030 K. N*/N0 = By what percentage does N*/N0 change if the temperature is raised by 20 K? What is ?*/?0 at 5060 K? N*/N0 =

Explanation / Answer

E = nhc/lamda = 6.023 x10^23 x 6.625x10^-34 x3x10^8/(372.6 x10^-9) = 321.3 KJ

b) formula is N*/No = (g*/go) exp( -E*/RT)/ exp(-Eo/RT) = (g*/go) exp(-dE/RT)

here E is energy per mole hence R =(k x N) is taken instead of k .

N*/No = ( 3) exp( -321.3 x 1000/8.314 x 2030) = 1.62 x10^-8

c) if T = 20 + 2030 = 2050 then

N*/No = 3 exp( -321.3 x1000/2050 x8.314) = 1.95 x10^-8

% of change =[ ( 1.95 -1.62) /1.62 ] x 100 = 20.37

d) N*/No = 3 exp( -321.3 x1000/8.314 x 5060) = 0.001446 = 1.446 x 10^-3
