Question

Can you guys help me understand these questions, or better interpret them, please?

1. Name an orbital that is not hybridized?

Is this question referring to how you can have 1s and 2p orbitals, but have a p orbital not be hybridized?

2. Name a molecular orbital.

I know a molecular orbital is a region of space in a molecule where electron are most likely to be found. An example would be      the lower energy additive H2 molecule and the subtractive higher in energy H2 molecule with a node. Anymore examples?

3. How many molecular orbitals would be obtained by combining five atomic orbitals?

4. Name a hybridized atomic orbital

Explanation / Answer

1. the Molecular orbital of H2 is not hybridized, since it involves two 1s atomic orbitals of two H atoms.

2. HCl is another simple example. It contains a molecular orbital involving the bonding interaction between H and Cl

3. five MO (it equals the number of atomic orbitals)

4. The C atom in CCl4 has a sp3-hybridized atomic orbital.
