There are two major metabolic reactions

Anabolic reactions and Catabolic reactions

Anabolic reactions involve building of molecules from small molecules using energy; these reactions are endergonic.

Example: Photosynthesis reaction

6CO2 + 6H2O ------> C6H12O6 + 6O2.

Catabolic reactions involve breakdown of larger molecules into smaller ones releasing energy. These reactions are exergonic.

Example: aerobic respiration

C6H12O6 + 6O2---->6CO2 + 6 H2O
