Question

Please help with electroplating experiment:

For the unknown solution in Flask 2, a list of candidate solutes is given below. For each metal ion, calculate and enter the theoretical MM/n ratios

I had already calculated the Molar mass:Mole ratio of the solution to be 56.36. The charge passed during the experiment was 500 C and Faray constant 96,500.

The list of solutes are:
CoCl2
AgNO3
CdCl2
Fe(NO3)3
CuCl2*4NH3
MgCl2
Pb(OH)2

You dont need to do all solutes maybe just 1 or 2 for example. Not sure what needs to be done or how to set it up. Can use molar mass but not given a mass.

Explanation / Answer

1) CoCl2

reduction reaction taking place :

Co+2 +   2e- ----> Co

Molar mass Cobalt (Co) = 58.93 g/mol

number of moles of electrons invloved = 2

Ratio of Molar mass / n = 58.93 /2

2) AgNo3

Reduction reaction taking place :

Ag+ +   e- ----> Ag

Molar mass Silver (Ag) = 107.88 g/mol

number of moles of electrons invloved = 1

Ratio of Molar mass / n = 107.88 /1

3) CdCl2

reduction reaction taking place :

Cd+2 +   2e- ----> Cd

Molar mass Cadmium (Cd) = 112.4 g/mol

number of moles of electrons invloved = 2

Ratio of Molar mass / n = 112.4 /2

In same way you can solve for rest solutes
