Question

A metal sample was weighed. Metal Z - 26.3785g

Devise a method to determine the volume of the metal sample you weighed in section. Use this volume along with the mass measured to determine the density of the metal sample. Explain your technique along with any calculations used, making sure to record the density value to a suitable level of accuracy.

Describe the method you used to determine the volume of sample below, include any calculations used, and state where any errors or inaccuracies could arise.

Calculated Density of sample _____________

Explanation / Answer

A metal sample was weighed. Metal Z - 26.3785g

Method to calculate the volume of metal sample:

1) Weigh suppose x grams of metal with Z - 26.3785g.

2) Transfer the amount x into a volumetric flask of volume say 10ml or 25ml or any volume depending the amount of metal x taken. Try to keep the volume low to have an accurate measurement.

3) Now, pour a measured volume distilled water (say you transfer the final volume of distilled water using a micropippete) into the volumetric flask to make up the volume.

So, the total volume of the flask, say = 10ml

volume of distilled water poured = k ml (you have already measured)

Thus, volume of metal = (10 - k ) ml

Method to calculate the volume of metal sample:

Now, you have the volume of metal sample and its weight. Thus,

density = mass /volume ={ x/ (10-k) } g/ml or { x/ (10-k) } g/cm3
