A series of acid-base indicators can be used to estimate the pH of an unknown solution. The solution was colorless with phenolphthalein, yellow with methyl orange, and yellow with methyl red. Using the scale below determine the possible pH range of this solution.
Phenolphthalein colorless (pH = 1-8) ; pinkish red (pH 8-13)
Methyl orange red (pH = 1-3) ; yellowish red ( pH = 3 - 4.5); yellow (pH = 4.5-13)
Methyl red red ( pH = 1
Explanation / Answer
The solution was colorless with phenolphthalein
For this we need pH = 1 to 8
yellow with methyl orange
pH = 4.5-13
yellow with methyl red
pH = 6.5-13
pH must be below 8 since phenolphtaleyn was colorles
pH mut be greater than 6.5 since mehyl red was there
6.5 < pH < 8
