Question

The fluid levels in the tracheoles of insects retreats during exercise because: a. increases in potassium and adenosine combined with osmosis pulls into the tracheoles b. decreased fluid pressure in the tracheoles cause the fluid to enter the insect's body c. decreased capillary action in the tracheoles reduces the cohesive properties of water. d. exercise increases solutes in the hemolymph that pull water out of the tubules by osmosis. e. the heat created by exercise causes evaporation of the water

Explanation / Answer

d,Respiratory system of insect is comprised of series of rigid tubes called Tracheae that are connected to the outside air via spores called spiracles(usually present in pairs). These Tracheae then branch into finer structues called Tracheoles.Tracheoles are often fluid filled when the insect is resting.During exersice the muscle cells connected to the tracheoles suck up the fluid and Oxygen gas reaches upto the end of tracheoles. This sucking of fluid happens because the concentration of solutes build up in the hemolymph and the exersicing muscle and fluid gets drawn by Osmosis.
