Question

Use the following limited activity series to answer the next two questions: Ag (s) Ag+ (aq) + e- 10. Two test tubes contain a solution of hydrochloric acid. To the first test tube a piece of silver metal is added while a piece of aluminum metal is added to the second one. What would you observe? a. Bubbles will form in both test tubes due to the formation of a gas. b. Bubbles will form in the second tube due to the formation of a gas but not in the first one. Bubbles will form in the first test tube due to the formation of a gas but not in the second one. c. d. Bubbles will form in both test tubes due to the formation of a gas. 11. What reason would you use to explain your answer in your previous question? a. metals will react with acids to form hydrogen gas b. aluminum metal is more reactive than acids but not siver metal c. silver metal is more reactive than acids but not aluminum metal d. metals ill not react with acids because they are less reactive

Explanation / Answer

10) ans (b)

bubbles will form in second test tube because of formation of hydrogen gas. but with silver we will not observe.

11) ans (b)   aluminium metal is more reactive than hydrochloric acit where as Ag is less reactive so Ag cannot displace hydrogen gas from its acid.

reason: only the metals which are more reactive than HCl can displace hydrogen. metals which are less reactive canot replace hydrogen from its place.

by observing above given rections Al is more reactive than HCl. but Ag is less reactive than HCl.
